The Heygoods

The Heygoods make music the way it ought to be — witty, playful, rocking and performed with heart ’n’ grit. Led by the husband and wife team of singer/guitarist David Champagne — a veteran of the bands Treat Her Right, the Shane-Champagne Band and the Jazz Popes — and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Katie Champagne, who fronted Great Atomic Power, they make everyday life sound a hell of a lot more exciting than it is. The Boston Herald says their debut album The Lights of Town is full of "terrific picking, great singing and a lot of discernable joy." And the sequel, Fleetwood Skynyrd, has just arrived, adding 12 smore songs and a whole lot more whoopass to their stomping legacy. Order it now!

Reviews of Fleetwood Skynyrd

"The title of this album carries a change-of-pace cool -- and so does the music. Fronted by David Champagne (formerly of Treat Her Right) and his wife, Katie, the Heygoods dish lovable country twang and sound like a sassy, meat-eating version of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. And you've got to appreciate lines like ''wish I was at the movies eating popcorn," ''all I want is a good night's sleep," and ''I miss my dog, I miss him bad." Light, upbeat, and deliciously intoxicating.
-Boston Globe June 17, 2005

"How can one make a new record?". The Heygoods, by having a great male/female tag-team singing, ask the question, learn the answer and then throw out the information, giving the listener only an opportunity to intuit the new-found knowledge.

The Heygoods' new record is not a single song on a cylinder nor a single eight minute anthem split on two sides. It doesn't battle the studio wizardry of Pet Sounds but pares it down.
"one verb can do what 50 adjectives attempt". In the case of the Heygoods, a verb can be a note, a chord, a harmonized chorus, a bass line, or anything else in one of their songs that simultaneously completes the song and leaves it wide open. This record, reverent of the age of the gatefold sleeve, mocking of that which came directly after, and forever in dept to everything else, displays how Katie Champagnes singing continues to delve deep into the domestic life of family, friends and fuckups. With focus, humility, drive, and tons of fun, they Heygoods are fully versed in country, rock, alt-country and every other bland stigma with which one can try to label their music. The Heygoods take each sound and make it their own. While no symphony was employed, Fleetwood Skynyrd is full where it should be and sparse at special moments. The songwriting is direct, simple and mulit-layered. The singing, both male and female, fit together and fight perfectly. "Too good to be true" goes another song... "Everyone wanted you"... One can only hope that the masses would have desires that want The Heygoods as they ask the right questions and make you dance the answers away."
